SEATTLE – The International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) is excited to announce the launch of a new mobile-friendly, web-based tool for reporting Pacific halibut tags. This innovative platform simplifies the tag reporting process, making it easier and faster to provide critical data that supports research on Pacific halibut movement, growth, and longevity.
Access the tool here:
Why a new tool?
Previously, reporting a tag required either visiting a staffed port or mailing the tag to IPHC, which could delay data collection. The new tool overcomes these challenges by allowing harvesters to report tag information directly from the field using their mobile phones or any internet-enabled device.
Key features of the new reporting tool:
Easy access: The web-based platform is accessible from any internet-enabled device, whether in the field or at a port, eliminating the need to track down IPHC staff or visit specific ports for reporting a tag recovery.
Streamlined reporting process: Users can now upload photos and enter tag details – including tag number, capture date, location, and fish length – in a few simple steps.
Photographic documentation: For specific tags involved in the tail pattern study (orange tags marked with the text “PLEASE PHOTOGRAPH TAIL”), users are prompted to upload a photo of the white side of the tail, aiding studies on pigmentation persistence. This ensures essential visual data is recorded and stored in the IPHC database for analysis.
Instant confirmation: After submission, users receive a downloadable PDF confirmation letter. Complete submissions are also eligible for reward—a cap, a beanie, or $10. Please follow the instructions in the letter to claim your reward.
